Cortana app for Android leaks ahead of launch

Cortana, Microsoft's virtual assistant for Android has leaked online. The APK file for the beta version of the Cortana app is available to download for Android devices running Android 4.4 KitKat and higher. The file size is 19MB.

For those who don't know, Cortana is a Virtual assistant, just like Siri (iPhone) and Google Now (Android) that aims to provide information to users as and when needed. For example reminding to pick up milk from grocery store, track a flight, looking up for answers.

Cortana stores information about users and performs several actions like search the web, set alarms, set reminders, tracking flight, weather, nearby places to eat, track route and many more.

Unfortunately, the leaked beta version of Cortana for Android doesn't include all the feature available on Windows Phone. One of them is 'Hey Cortana' option which activates the voice assistant. Some parts of the app are unfinished such as the ability to send message to contacts.

The official Cortana app will be released within the next few weeks. It will also be released on iOS.

Photo Story app for Windows Phone creates videos from photos

Microsoft has launched a new photo app for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile dubbed Photo Story.  It is a product of Microsoft Garage.

Photo Story automatically arranges the best representative photos of an event together and makes a themed video album featuring them. Users can also use staylised music to the video album. The app also offers editing and sharing tools and a plethora of transition effects to allow users to do everything without ever needing another photo editing app.

The app relies on machine learning and computer vision to auto-select the best photos, and generate the video. There is no risk of including low quality or duplicate photos in the video. Users have to choose a day, theme and music to create videos using the app. The app will then select the best photos of the day and create the video which can be shared via email or social network.

Photo Story’s algorithm isn’t just looking for technical quality, such as whether or not it’s blurry or the exposure is correct. It also evaluates for what is referred to as “interestingness.” Microsoft noted in a blog post. “You can also have a very high-quality photo of a road or a blade of grass, but that’s not necessarily interesting enough to qualify for the story, For example, if you took 200 photos, the algorithm understands that five may not be enough photos. Likewise, it doesn’t choose too many,”

Photo Story won't take much time to create a video as it does all the processing on the device itself, minimizing the waiting period wasted in uploads and downloads. The app supports voice command via Cortana, so if you say "Story from today" the photos you took today will be sorted within the app to automatically generate a video.

Foxconn may soon build Microsoft's Windows Phones in India

The Times of India reports that Microsoft is closing in on an agreement with Foxconn to manufacture phones in India. Foxconn will start manufacturing smartphones in the country for Microsoft in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

Foxconn is a Taiwan-based contract manufacturer. The company makes phones for top global brands, including Apple as well as Nokia N1 tablet.

Terry Gou, Chairman of Foxconn Technology Group, recently visited India and made a statement that the company will commit $2 billion to set up 10 to 12 factories across the country with initial plans for Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujrat.

The new Foxconn factory named Rising Star, is a rented building in manufacturing hub Sri City with over 100 employees. The Rs. 770 million facility is now being used to put together smartphones for Xiaomi, and American brand InFocus.

The report also states that multiple sources have confirmed that Foxconn plant will manufacture two variants of Microsoft smartphone in India. The Indian market has so far been catered to from China, Finland and Vietnam. According to analysts, Microsoft would join brands such as Micromax, Lava, Spice, Gionee and Xiaomi that have begun or looking to start their operation in India, instead of importing finished goods from China.

In recent time a number of Mobile product makers including Sony, LG, Motorola, Lenovo, HTC, Asus and Micromax have announced their plans to manufacture their handsets in India. Suddenly it seems like everyone has an interest to manufacture their phones in India, but there is a darker side. The interest is triggered because of the hike in excise duty up to 12.5% to boost local manufacturing. Smartphone brands have realized that manufacturing in India is more feasible than importing parts and assembling them. This will also result in job opportunities.

Of-course, Indian consumers will benefit from this because handset manufacturers can now assemble and sell smartphones locally and also to neighboring countries, with consumer benefiting with lower prices. India is expected to become the second largest smartphone market in the world by 2017.

Microsoft rolling out an update to enable 4G support on select Lumia phones in India

4G LTE handsets are growing in popularity in India with several handset makers releasing 4G LTE supported devices to cash in the opportunity. The rising popularity of 4G LTE handsets has prompted Microsoft to enable 4G support on their devices in India to stay in the competition.

Microsoft is rolling out a minor firmware update over-the-aire (OTA) to select Lumia devices which enables 4G LTE support on select Lumia devices.  Microsoft has several handsets in India with 4G functionality, but lacked the necessary software. So if you have a Lumia device with global 4G support, the update should enable LTE functionality on your Lumia handsets.

Microsoft Lumia 1520, Lumia 1320, Lumia 930, Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 830 and Lumia 625 are being update to 4G. After receiving the OTA update, smartphone users will get another mobile data setting for 4G, apart from 2G (GSM) and 3G (WCDMA) settings that existed already.

It's worth noting that most of these devices only support India's upcoming FDD LTE band 3 due to hardware limitations, something that Microsoft will rectify in future Lumia handsets.

Although the update enables 4G LTE support, you will have to be on a carrier that currently has 4G service in the country.

Windows 10 Mobile Build 10512 now available to Insiders

Microsoft has rolled out Build 10512 of the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview to Windows Insider on the fast ring. The latest Windows 10 Mobile build comes with a couple of new improvements and a few features.

The Windows 10 Mobile is now feature complete, and Microsoft is working on bug fixes and performance improvements. Here's whats new, improved and fixed in Windows 10 Mobile Build 10512
  • General improvement in overall stability and performance
  • You can now set the Lock screen and background image from within the photos app
  • Improved Lavtian and Chinese inputs
  • Improvements to the Kid's Corner tile layout
  • Improved ability of Data Sense Notifications
  • Modified Shape Writing algorithm to be less aggressive in suggesting contact names over common words.
  • Fixed an issue where apps installed on SD cards weren't working after reboot
  • Resolved an issue where camera would not launch when the phone was locked
  • Fixed an issue where notifications for incoming text weren't appearing.
  • Fixed an issue where touch screen wouldn't be responsive after ending a phone call on some phones.
  • Fixed an issue where folder tiles have overlapping text.
The Fixes listed above are the top known issues reported by Windows Insider. According to Windows Insider leader Gabriel Aul, this build has over 2,000 bug fixes as compared to the last preview version 10166 which released a month ago. Aul also noted that Windows Insiders should check out the Windows stores and get the latest app updates, as there have been lots of improvements to the apps since the last build.

While Microsoft has made many improvements and fixed bugs with Windows 10 Mobile preview build 10512, there are still few known issues in this build. Here's the list:
  • Mobile hotspot doesn’t work in this build. When sharing the Internet from your phone using Mobile Hotspot, devices will fail to get a valid IP address from your phone and will show no internet access.
  • Two-factor authentication for your MSA with a phone number doesn’t work in this build. If you reset your phone and go through the first run experience, you won’t be able to input more than 2 characters for validating phone or text authentication. If you have a secondary email for two-factor authentication – you can choose that. As a workaround, add secondary email for two-factor authentication.
  • Some phones might spend a long time in the post update migration experience – just let the phone sit and it should complete this migration.
  • Apps that use background audio such as Groove, Podcast, Pandora, etc. will crash when launching after receiving an app update from the Store. Rebooting the device will resolve this issue.
  • Some phones with a large number of tiles pinned to the Start screen may get stuck in a state where the device shows “Loading…”; the device will need to be reset or rolled back to Windows Phone 8.1 using Windows Phone Recovery Tool.
  • Some apps may fail to update through the Store with the error code 0x80073cf9; uninstalling the application and reinstalling it will resolve this issue.
  • The Movies & TV app will not work in this build (video playback is currently broken).
If you have decided to be a Windows Insider, you will have to join the Windows Insider Program [ Link ] and after that download the Windows Insider app [ Link ] from the store. You will be able to get Windows 10 Mobile builds on your devices.
